Engineering Entrance Exams in Nepal

Engineering Entrance Exams in Nepal

If you want to study engineering in Nepal, you need to pass an entrance exam. Unlike India's single JEE system, Nepal has separate entrance exams for each university. This guide covers all major engineering entrance exams so you can plan your preparation and applications strategically.

Quick Comparison

University Exam Mode Duration Questions Total Marks Negative Marking
TU (IOE) CBT 2 hours 100 140 Yes (10%)
KU (KUCAT) CBT (Adaptive) 2 hours 120 Scaled No
Pokhara University Written 2 hours 100 100 No
Purbanchal University Written 2 hours 100 100 No

1. IOE Entrance Exam (Tribhuvan University)

The Institute of Engineering (IOE) entrance exam is the most competitive engineering entrance in Nepal, conducted by Tribhuvan University for BE and B.Arch programs.

Key Details

  • Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Questions: 100 (60 one-mark + 40 two-mark = 140 total marks)
  • Subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English
  • Negative Marking: 10% of marks allocated per wrong answer
  • Exam Period: Bhadra (August-September)
  • Application Fee: NPR 2,000

Eligibility

  • Passed 10+2 Science with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics
  • Minimum 45% in PCM with at least C Grade in each subject (NEB)
  • No age limit or attempt restrictions

Programs Offered (12 programs)

Civil, Computer, Electrical, Electronics Communication and Information, Mechanical, Aerospace, Agricultural, Automobile, Chemical, Geomatics, Industrial Engineering, and Architecture.

Campuses

Five constituent campuses (Pulchowk, Thapathali, Purbanchal, Pashchimanchal, Chitwan) and ten affiliated private colleges.

2. KUCAT (Kathmandu University)

The Kathmandu University Common Admission Test (KUCAT) is a computer-based adaptive test for admission to KU's School of Engineering in Dhulikhel.

Key Details

  • Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT) — adaptive (difficulty adjusts based on your answers)
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Questions: 120 MCQs (40 per subject — Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics)
  • Scoring: Scaled scoring system (not raw marks)
  • Negative Marking: No
  • Exam Period: Shrawan-Bhadra (July-August), multiple shifts
  • Application Fee: NPR 2,500

How Adaptive Testing Works

KUCAT adjusts question difficulty in real-time. If you answer correctly, the next question gets harder (and worth more). If you answer incorrectly, it gets easier. This means two students can get different questions but be scored fairly based on difficulty level.

Eligibility

  • Passed 10+2 Science (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics
  • Minimum C+ Grade in each subject or 50% aggregate

Programs Offered

  • Civil Engineering (with Hydropower specialization)
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Communication)
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Power and Control)
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Geomatics Engineering
  • Architecture
  • B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence
  • Mining Engineering

Why Choose KU?

  • No negative marking reduces guessing penalty
  • Adaptive testing gives a more accurate measure of ability
  • Strong industry connections and research focus
  • Dhulikhel campus with modern facilities

3. Pokhara University Engineering Entrance

Pokhara University conducts its own entrance exam for engineering programs offered through affiliated colleges and its School of Engineering.

Key Details

  • Mode: Written (paper-based)
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Questions: 100 MCQs
  • Total Marks: 100
  • Subjects: Mathematics (40%), Physics (30%), Chemistry (20%), English (10%)
  • Negative Marking: No
  • Exam Period: Bhadra (August-September)

Eligibility

  • Passed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics
  • Minimum aggregate as specified by PU each year

Programs Offered

  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Software Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering

4. Purbanchal University Engineering Entrance

Purbanchal University runs entrance exams for its Faculty of Engineering programs, offered through affiliated colleges across eastern and central Nepal.

Key Details

  • Mode: Written (paper-based)
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Questions: 100 MCQs
  • Total Marks: 100
  • Subjects: Mathematics (40%), Physics (30%), Chemistry (20%), English (10%)
  • Passing Marks: 33 out of 100

Which Exam Should You Prioritize?

If you want the most options: IOE

IOE has the most engineering programs (12) across the most campuses and affiliated colleges. Pulchowk Campus is considered the most prestigious engineering institution in Nepal.

If you're strong in concepts but not speed: KU

KUCAT's adaptive format and no negative marking reward deep understanding over speed. The difficulty adjusts to your level.

Apply to multiple universities

Most entrance exams happen in Bhadra (August-September) but on different dates. Apply to all universities you're interested in — the application fees are small compared to the cost of missing an opportunity. The syllabus overlap (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics from NEB 10+2) means preparing for one largely prepares you for all.

Preparation Strategy for Multiple Exams

Since all exams test the same core subjects from the NEB 10+2 syllabus, here's how to prepare efficiently:

Core Preparation (works for all exams)

  1. Master the NEB syllabus — this is the foundation for every entrance exam
  2. Focus on Mathematics and Physics — they carry the highest weightage across all exams
  3. Practice MCQs daily — speed and accuracy matter in timed exams
  4. Take mock tests — simulate each exam's specific format

Exam-Specific Preparation

Exam Extra Focus
IOE Speed (100 Qs in 2 hrs), negative marking strategy, 2-mark questions
KU Conceptual depth (adaptive difficulty), no time pressure from negative marking
PU / PbU Broader coverage, English section, no negative marking

Recommended Timeline (after NEB exams)

Month Focus
Month 1 Revise full syllabus, focus on weak topics
Month 2 Intensive MCQ practice, start mock tests
Month 3 Full mock tests for each exam format, revision

Important Dates (Typical Timeline)

Event Typical Period
NEB 10+2 Exams Chaitra-Baisakh (March-April)
NEB Results Jestha-Ashar (June-July)
IOE Registration Shrawan (July-August)
KU Registration Shrawan (July-August)
