IOE Entrance Exam Guide 2082

What is the IOE Entrance Exam?

The IOE (Institute of Engineering) entrance exam is a national-level competitive examination conducted by Tribhuvan University (TU) for admission into undergraduate engineering programs across Nepal. It is one of the most sought-after entrance exams for students aspiring to pursue BE (Bachelor of Engineering) and B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture) degrees.

The exam is administered by the IOE Entrance Examination Board and is mandatory for all students seeking admission to TU-affiliated engineering colleges.

Eligibility Criteria

To appear in the IOE entrance exam, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Educational Qualification: Passed 10+2 (or equivalent) in Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics
  • Minimum Marks: At least 45% in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in Class 11 and 12, with a minimum C Grade in each subject (for NEB students)
  • Nationality: Nepali citizens and foreign nationals (foreign nationals are eligible for the full-fee program only)
  • Age: No upper age limit
  • Attempts: No limit on number of attempts

Students appearing in their 10+2 final exams can also apply provisionally.

Exam Pattern

Aspect Details
Mode Computer-Based Test (CBT)
Type Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
Total Questions 100
Total Marks 140
Duration 2 hours
Negative Marking 10% of the marks allocated to that question
Language English

The exam has a mix of 1-mark and 2-mark questions (60 questions of 1 mark + 40 questions of 2 marks = 140 total marks).

Subject-wise Distribution

Subject Questions Marks
Mathematics 35 50
Physics 27 40
Chemistry 22 30
English 16 20
Total 100 140

Note: The exact question-marks breakdown may vary slightly each year. Always check the official IOE notice for the latest distribution.

Marking Scheme

  • Correct Answer: +1 or +2 marks (depending on the question)
  • Wrong Answer: -10% of marks allocated (i.e., -0.1 for a 1-mark question, -0.2 for a 2-mark question)
  • Unanswered: No marks deducted

This means choosing answers carefully is important. Random guessing can cost you marks, especially on 2-mark questions.

  • Start early — Begin preparation as soon as your 10+2 exams end (you'll have about 3-4 months)
  • Focus on Mathematics — It carries the highest weightage (45 marks)
  • Practice with mock tests — Timed practice builds speed and accuracy
  • Understand negative marking — Don't guess blindly; eliminate wrong options first
  • Revise regularly — Consistent revision is more effective than last-minute cramming
